Liza Jessie Peterson – playwright, artivist, poet, actor and advocate – returns to the New School for a dialogue about her new short film Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices From a Plantation Prison.

Angola tells the story of how Peterson's acclaimed play "The Peculiar Patriot" was shut down by authorities of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, America's largest prison-plantation and examines what led to its censorship, the material that threatened the prison system, and how the impact of her visit rippled through Angola long after her art was silenced. Directed and edited by Cinque Northern, the film features Liza Jessie Peterson and Norris Henderson. After a ‘sneak peek’ screening of this riveting new film, Liza Jessie Peterson will be interviewed about her work by Lang Theater faculty, Cecilia Rubino. Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices From a Plantation Prison begins screening on Paramount+ in November. (This program will not be recorded.)

The Arts Platform Fall 2022 theme is Staging a Revolution: Black Arts Now  which explores the relationship between artistic expression, social justice, and politics during the contemporary Black arts movement that has exploded over the last decade. As such, we welcome presentations by artists, activists, curators, scholars, and other practitioners who are working toward and reimagining racial justice within the arts industries. While the course was born out of this boom in Black theater and arts, it is also interested in coalition-building across different identities and communities.
